چکیده

5 Computer simulators of real world processes are often computationally expensive 6 and require many inputs. The problem of the computational expense can be handled 7 using emulation technology; however, highly-multidimensional input spaces may re8 quire more simulator runs to train and validate the emulator. We aim to reduce the 9 dimensionality of the problem by screening the simulator’s inputs for non-linear effects 10 on the output rather than distinguishing between negligible and active effects. Our 11 proposed method is built upon the elementary effects method for screening (Morris, 12 1991) and utilises a threshold value to separate the inputs with linear and non-linear 13 effects. The technique is simple to implement and acts in a sequential way in order to 14 keep the number of simulator runs down to a minimum, whilst identifying the inputs 15 that have non-linear effects. The algorithm is applied on a set of simulated examples 16 and a rabies disease simulator where we observe run savings ranging between 28% and 17 63% compared to the batch elementary effects method. Stress Analysis of the Human Ligamentous Lumber Spine-From Computer-Assisted Tomography to Finite Element Analysis

Detailed investigation on biomechanics of a complex structure such as the human lumbar spine requires the use of advanced computer-based technique for both the geometrical reconstruction and the stress analysis. In the present study, the computer-assisted tomography (CAT) and finite element method (FEM) are merged to perform detailed three dimensional nonlinear analysis of the human ligamentous...

RELIABILITY MEASURES AND SENSITIVITY ANALYSIS OF A COMPLEX MATRIX SYSTEM INCLUDING POWER FAILURE

This paper investigates the reliability characteristics of a complex system having nine subsystems arranged in the form of 3x3 matrix in which each row contains three subsystems. The configuration of the row is of the type 2-out-of-3: F. Each subsystem has n units connected in series. The system fails if any one row containing three subsystems fails. The considered system analyzed incorporating...

An Enhanced Finite Element method for Two Dimensional Linear Viscoelasticity using Complex Fourier Elements

In this paper, the finite element analysis of two-dimensional linear viscoelastic problems is performed using quadrilateral complex Fourier elements and, the results are compared with those obtained by quadrilateral classic Lagrange elements. Complex Fourier shape functions contain a shape parameter which is a constant unknown parameter adopted to enhance approximation’s accuracy. Since the iso...
